Moresque: Alessandro Zambelli’s new collection of lamps for Seletti captures the charms of the Alhambra

An imposing fortress in the heart of Andalucia. Within lie an alluring succession of halls and courtyards, stone and shafts of light, architectural Arabesques and slender arcades, polychrome in glorious contrasts. Round about, the heady scent of jasmine blossom wafts up from the Generalife gardens. Beyond, the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, always snow-capped, glint in the sunlight. Moresque, the new collection of pendant and table lamps by Alessandro Zambelli for Seletti, captures the Moorish charm of the Alhambra. Clear lines and compact volumes are features of this collection of light fittings. As if tattooed, the surfaces of Moresque flaunt an array of bold colours and more subtle filigree polychrome. The white version of the light diffuser is porcelain. The slender ribs of architectural Arabesque alternate with bolder bands of colour in a vigorous succession of polychrome, stylized lines. The tones are pastel: orange burnt, pale turquoise, indigo, pistachio green and slate grey.

First pick your version: pendant or table. Each comes in two versions: the pendant model comes with a ceiling rose in polychrome decor, size 19 cm H by 7,6 cm Ø. The reading lamp, by contrast, measures 20 cm H by 10 cm Ø. Four-watt LED light bulbs fit the entire collection. Moresque captures old-world charm and bygone features and gives them a contemporary spin. The result strikes a new balance, in a composition of diverse stylistic elements co-existing in happy harmony. Past and present set aside their irreconcilable conflict and allow themselves to be transformed. Enlightened with new, synergetic strength, they highlight each other’s mix of contrasting features in a design project which becomes a sign of the times.
