À Capucha! is an independent brand that (re)creates the capucha, a traditional Portuguese garment, used by shepherds and peasants. It is part of the design consultancy Estufa and was born to explore the convergence of design and manufacture.
À Capucha!’s first collection – a series of 6 original hoods – was the result of a collaboration between designer Helena Cardoso and the Arões Group of Artisans, who (re)invent it, according to ancestral manufacturing techniques.
The “capucha” is a traditional Portuguese garment, used by shepherds and farmers. Once it is placed over the head, it allows a total freedom of movements during the rural chores, while offering shelter against the cold and the rain.
Several centuries of history improved its shape and the technique of working with burel, turning it into a functional, as well as exquisite object.
Entirely handmade and made of burel (100% wool), our capuchas are warm, impermeable and highly resistant. The shape and the color palette were carefully redesigned, in order to become more functional and adapted to contemporary usage.
Cut, sewn and embroidered with the same art since hundreds of years ago, we brought the capuchas from the small Portuguese villages into the world.
