Hi Moco Loco,
My name is Robby Cuthbert and I’m a young designer living in Palo Alto, CA. Below is a little blurb about two new designs, one a table and the other a lamp, that I have just finished work on and recently launched on Kickstarter. I hope you will consider featuring one or both of them on Moco Loco!
The Contour Coffee Table is a modern, sculptural table made of bamboo and steel cable. Along with being a functional piece of furniture, this table is also a piece of art that explores the role of tension and opposing forces as the means of creating a completely stable system. The base of the table is comprised of four bamboo S-curves that never actually touch, but are instead held solidly in place by a unique method of wiring steel cable. Along with giving support to the table, the cables create beautiful contours that your eye will wander over endlessly. This project has been nearly two years in the making, as I first developed its signature wiring pattern as a senior in college and have been experimenting with and fine-tuning the process ever since. I just launched the design on Kickstarter today and am really excited to be sharing it with the world. In addition to the coffee table, I am also promoting a design that I am calling the Contour Lamp. This lamp was designed just for the Kickstarter campaign as a less expensive option and I am really psyched about how well it turned out. Like the Contour Coffee Table, the Contour lamp employs tension to create a stable system. The central S-curve of the Contour lamp is simply a scaled-down version of the S-curve used to make coffee table and thus ties the two designs together. A hand-made rice paper lampshade covers the light bulb and, though the pictured prototype is made out of regular plywood, the final version will be made of the same beautiful bamboo as the coffee table.
