My name is Charl Heynike and I am director and co-founder, along with Oliver Tebbutt, of a young British product design company, Dovedale Design Studio. We launched our first product last month and are keen to share our story with you.
Dovedale Design Studio is a company dedicated to fine craftsmanship and design, created by two best friends who met whilst studying a BA in Fine Art Sculpture at Central St Martins. After university Oliver pursued an apprenticeship in cabinet making and carpentry, whilst I left to do a Masters in luxury product design at ECAL and pursue a career in design. After a further four years, our love of design and creation hadn’t faded, and our passion for exceptional artistry lead us to create Dovedale Design Studio in 2016.
Strictly limited to editions of one hundred, our products are individually handmade in London using the finest quality sustainable materials. We source all our materials from within the United Kingdom and as such we feel it is important to also collaborate with local craftsmen on our design projects. Each project is inspired by acts of ritual and ceremony, such as cooking, drinking tea, or writing a letter. Deeply ingrained with tradition, these acts often take time to prepare and complete. In a fast-living, online world, our designs respect the rich history of these tactile traditions and celebrate the time taken to enjoy them.
Our first product, launched last month is an exclusive collection of 400-fold Damascus kitchen knives, presented in 3000-year-old bog oak presentation boxes. The blades of these knives were wrought by local craftsmen at Blenheim Forge, in Peckham Rye, whilst product design and woodworking were undertaken in South Bermondsey by myself and Oliver respectively. We currently have three products in this collection: a five knife, three knife and single knife set. Each set is handmade to order in London and all of our products are currently sold through our website.
