The Earless mug is the first self initiated product of Designstudio Lars Kloen as a result of our mission and slogan ‘materializing social influences’. With this DSLK-collection Lars Kloen wants to combine industrial engineering with the wonderful craftsmanship that is still widely available in the Netherlands. In order to develop material-conscious and meaningful products Lars Kloen believes in close relationships with both producers and consumers and to reflect our daily habits and social needs as well as political issues.
The Earless mug is a hybrid of a coffee cup and its saucer. Instead of a handle (or “ear”), the design incorporates space to rest the spoon so it doesn’t poke into the user’s cheek when drinking and eliminates the need for a saucer. The microwave and dishwasher safe handmade porcelain mugs are designed by using 3D CAD systems to optimize function, ergonomics and the use of materials. Then the design is translated into a slightly upscaled FDM 3D printed model. The model is upscaled because of the fact that porcelain shrinks when being baked. The FDM-method of 3D printing is relatively low-res which gives beautiful details on the bottom of the mugs and makes the relationship between technology and craftsmanship subtly visible.
The elegant shape of the Earless makes it possible to stack the mugs even with the spoons still in them! This makes it easier to clear the table during birthdays and lovely evenings with family and friends, but also saves space in your cupboards.
