I’m writing to introduce you to the work of San Francisco-based artist, Erica Steiner. Steiner works in oil and gold leaf on canvas to create ornamental and textile-inspired environments and landscapes. Her work is a dialogue with varied aesthetic disciplines including folk art, craft traditions, traditional Indian and Aboriginal painting, medieval Catholic illuminated manuscripts, Victorian imagery and graphic design. Through the careful study and execution of ornate pattern work, Steiner seeks to echo the cellular patterns that constitute all matter. Her work takes shape in series of twenty to thirty paintings painted in many layers, over time.
I’ve attached a selection of images from the two most recent series of the artist’s work. For additional images, an artist statement and a bio, visit www.ericasteiner.com.
