Geodo foam shapes enable children to build things from their imagination. To create a 3D shape, simply slide together the brightly colored pieces in any combination. A friction fit holds them in place, allowing the rapid construction of geometric buildings, costumes, helmets, and other creative accessories.
I was inspired from my experiences with 3D modeling and fractals to make a simple toy that allowed the creation of many types of things from a small set of modular parts. I wanted it to embody minimalist design, practical construction, and fit a variety of purposes. EVA foam provided the right lightness, flexibility, and friction to create interlocking designs that stay together without glue.
The methodology of open-ended construction encourages the development of ideas beyond the scope of a child’s known language. This means children can begin working with advanced geometric sculptures way before they would learn traditional geometry, engineering, or design in school. Playing with Geodos is intuitive and quickly turns on the imagination and discovery of new forms.
