Gubia Group, leader in projecting and building all types of spaces and designs in wood, also enters the world of the fashion at the highest level. Working with the Spanish firm Bakari_the handmade art, the Group has manufactured different wooden features that form part of the Spanish brand’s exclusive designs (Iroko Clutch, a party bag, and Pyramid bags, with a more casual line) that position it at the forefront in trends for women’s accessories.
The two bag lines are environmentally friendly and sustainable products, with the participation and professional experience, in addition to the craftwork of GUBIA Group, which had a clear goal. As architect Verónica Sancho, Director of the Group’s Technical Department, comments, “the idea was get good bag working and performance, respecting the original design that Bakari had. Being used to large scale works that normally have a component that turns into a challenge, these bags looked like another one. It has been a real artisan and diminutive challenge in which are carpenters’ hands, used to hard work with large, heavy planks, seemed enormous”, adds Sancho with a touch of humour.
For all of these reasons, for the morphology and essence of the bags as pieces in themselves, the type of wood chosen by Bakari for both models has been Iroko, with the FSC seal, a certificate that guarantees the material’s sustainable use and that GUBIA Group always works with. In this case, the type of wood is very stable and easy to shape and it has been given a natural wax finish. The result is a simple but elegant look that is long-lasting and resistant.
The most stimulating thing for GUBIA Group, adds Sancho, “has been programming the design in CNC machining software. The slightly rounded forms in three directions require the work of a five axis machine that we got involved in. After getting each one of the wooden parts for the bags, both in shape and in dimension, we then chose the metal fittings so that bags work correctly”. These are two diminutive spring hinges that are adhered to the casing with a high technical performance adhesive that is highly resistant to traction and shear, allowing for opening and closing of both sides. Moreover, long magnets, hidden under the leather that lines the bags, act as a snap fastener, and two metallic triangles act as the hooks for the chain.
The new line of Bakari bags is an important advance in fashion design. They combine made in Spain design and craftwork. These bags respond to the current needs of a contemporary, functional and cosmopolitan women who always has to be ready. And the simple, sober and elegant lines in both collections are the feminine answer to any situation.
Lastly, it should be highlighted that Bakari, when any of its products are bought, gives 1 euro to the CONI Association, a Spanish NGO that works in the International Cooperation for the Development of Guatemala by supporting the local initiatives carried out by the most disadvantaged, in addition to creating and strengthening the local networks that generate sustainable and independent development.
