The Kawa Porcelain series is an ongoing investigation into the process of batch-production that yields one-of-a-kind results. By slip-casting porcelain in leather molds, each and every Kawa Vase is subtly unique. The traditional process of slip casting is reliant upon rigid, plaster molds that result in objects that are nearly identical.
By making use of the porous nature of leather in conjunction with its semi-rigid structure, each and every Kawa Vase has a character of its own. The final form of the vase is created through a combination of the leather pattern and gravity’s effect on the leather mold. Such a complex process results in subtly one-of-a-kind porcelain vases that are textured like the leather molds in which they are cast.
