“It is design as Industrial Art that interests me, not just as a limited edition, but on a scale of mass production.” – Michael Young

During Art Brussels (April 2016) Michael Young will show 12 objects at Veerle Verbakel Gallery at the Zennestraat in Brussels. Michael Young (°1966, Sunderland, UK) has over 20 years of experience in development of industrial designs for brands such as Emeco, George Jensen, Giant, Iitala and Moke and collaborates with industrial manufacturing facilities throughout China.

The Metal Rock Collection consists of blue and gold aluminium objects such as a chair, stools and (side) tables. To create this limited edition collection, Michael Young developed a set of steel tools in which molten aluminium can be injected with high temperature gas under pressure, resulting in foamy rock formations. Secondly these objects are colored blue and/or gold in a facility that normally colors cellphone cases. Every object is unique and hand finished.

Veerle Verbakel Gallery specialises in limited edition twenty-first century design objects and art. The gallery was founded by Belgian-born Veerle Verbakel who commissions designers to create art objects using high quality industrial materials and techniques. “The Duality of Design” is the driving principle which guides her selection of artists, designers and objects.

Michael Young says: “The chair from the Metal Rock collection is one of the most crazy and unusual things I’ve tried; almost impossible to make.”

The show in Brussels is an extension of Michael Young’s solo exhibition at Grand Hornu “AL(L): Projects with Aluminium” which opened on 31 January 2016. This exhibition is an illustration of objects resulting from specific engineering, development and techniques related to aluminium. Michael Young shows own products alongside designs of Ross Lovegrove, Jerszy Seymour, Xavier Lust, Charles and Ray Eames, Marcel Breuer and Jean Prouvé.

About the selection of Michael Young as the first designer to be represented by the gallery, Veerle Verbakel says:

“Michael Young is an award winning designer and is one of the most influential British designers of his generation. We were greatly impressed by his work and approach as an industrial designer. In fact, we consider many of his pieces as industrial art. He often works from Brussels, with his studio headquarters in Hong Kong. He was the guest of honour of Interieur Kortrijk in 2002. We are very excited about showing these exclusive objects to the world.”

The show officially opens on 22 April 2016 (6 – 10 pm) and will take place at the Zennestraat 19, an art space in a beautiful, enclosed industrial building.
