EXHIBITION: TITUS KAPHAR: THE VESPER PROJECT
FEBRUARY 28 – APRIL 6, 2013
OPENING RECEPTION: FEBRUARY 28, 6-8 PM
FRIEDMAN BENDA GALLERY

History, memory, and art converge in Titus Kaphar’s new installation, The Vesper Project.

The culmination of an intense five-year engagement with the storylines of a fictional family, the Vespers, the project is a complex map of overlapping timetables and collective genealogies.

In a plot “that could rival a Toni Morrison novel,” (The Wall Street Journal, February 8, 2013) Kaphar unveils the Vesper’s sordid narrative through his arrangement of fractured rooms from an abandoned nineteenth-century home.  Among the shattered floorboards and latticed walls, Kaphar has seamlessly woven gilt-frames, twisted furniture, old photographs, and original paintings that transport the viewer into a disrupted mental state and conflate the continuum of history.
