Woodland is a residential community development on a sloping lot, nestled among large trees in Austin, Texas. While the beautiful property is located in a very desirable neighborhood, it presented a plethora of challenges to the architect. Unusual property lines, a steep bluff, an abundance of old-growth trees, and permitting violations from a previous owner were just a few of the issues. The client’s program required four houses, which presented privacy and view concerns. Rather than seeing these challenges as problematic, the architect chose to embrace the issues and build the houses within the constraints. The resulting design produced a unique experience that both provides ample space and a sense of privacy for each dwelling while overcoming all site issues. In short, the considered use of cost-effective materials and finishes allowed the resources needed to be properly allocate to work with, and celebrate, the fantastic site.
