Tensegrity (“Floating Compression”) Coffee Table
I donated the rights of a custom piece to an auction for pediatric orthopedics. The doctor who won the auction by BIDDing the highest amount requested a coffee table. He gave me no instructions other than make it 32″ square by standard coffee table height. I decided to use guitar strings as the cables in tension. I positioned painted plumbing caps to resemble tuning keys — the strings resonate in different pitches when strummed. When I delivered the piece, I left several mother-of-pearl guitar picks on the table. I named the piece Bo Biddley because of the guitar reference and the fact that the piece was bid on at an auction.
