Beauty in Functionality – DestinationBCN unveils the boutique Urgell apartment located in the heart of Barcelona city.
Barcelona: June 2012 – DestinationBCN has the pleasure of presenting the Urgell apartment, a hidden gem in the center of Barcelona
Known for their innovative and natural branding and design work, DestinationBCN / Stil Interiors in collaboration with architect LLuis Corbella developed the floor plan and concept to reflect a quirky yet stylish penthouse apartment that transcends the brand identity. The natural elements, clean lines and Nordic influences paired with Mediterranean soul remain ever present. This stunning and ultra-modern apartment is the epitome of style and is a key addition to the DestinationBCN portfolio.
The cool white interior acts as a backdrop for the bold black detailing, most noticeably in the playful lighting design and the numerous switches, towel hooks and wall plugs that seem to be patternless. Offset by warm wooden floors indoors and the sun-splashed terracotta terrace walls and floors, the loft’s ultramodern design finds its contrast in the magnificence of the city scape and the surrounding warm colors. The large panoramic, floor to ceiling window expand the sense of space.
The Urgell loft apartment embodies a ‘concealed concept’ with sliding hideaways that are functional yet stylish. Cleverly designed with adaptability as a focal point, grand sliding walls enable one of the bedrooms to be easily transformed to a discreet space or opened to blend in with the general lounge/dining area.
The indoors-outdoors approach is at the essence of the design of the apartment, where indoors spaces transcend to that of the outdoors. Using the same materials in both spaces like the indoor shower with the terrace tiles and the indoor shower aligned beside the outdoor shower give an affect of outdoor living from inside and vice versa.
Special design touches such as, where you just see the switch of the tap but the tap is hidden in the cupboard above the sink and the rain showers emulating that of outdoors both reinforce the element of play. Bold black fittings of the lights teamed with the functional elements of the towel hooks and wall sockets, give a gentle nod to cubism with blocked structures serving as decoration.
At the hub of the apartment is the floating kitchen island surrounded by Danish designers Hay’s ‘About a Chair’ swivel chairs upholstered with Kyadrat’s wool felt in a neutral oatmeal color. Plywood oak club chairs on a wood-rotating base are from Channels and the cork stools of Simple Forms Design are positioned throughout making simple things like resting a book look stylish.
The two-tiered terrace is an extension yet seamless incorporation into outdoor living, which is a huge part of Mediterranean culture. Plants are entwined on the wired ceiling of the lower part of terrace, harmonized with terracotta tiled floors and elegant Fermob outdoor lounge furniture made of flexible steel – coolly welcoming the guest to a sunny space. Modest 360º panoramic views from the upper terrace look on to the sheer splendor of the city, with sleek black sunloungers scattered across the orange terracotta tiles of the floor.
