Long, long ago, human beings took from nature with both hands. What could be extracted from nature was never in excess but was always sufficient. Human beings maintained a relationship of balance with nature; not as the master of their world, but as a part of nature. In the present era of rapid production, consumerism, and disposability, there still remains a segment of human society with unhurried hands who persist in a coexistence with nature.
Beginning with four natural materials most prevalent in Asia: bamboo, rattan, wood, and fibers, and surveying the guises these materials take on in various regions of the world – they may differ in the diversity of aesthetical culture, in the applications of materials and handcrafting techniques, but what remains the same is the sense of awe and love for nature.
Nature, naturally, this was once the original appearance of the world.
Behind the exhibition
Curator Cheng Tsung FENG begins with handcrafted daily objects made of the four main categories of natural materials; namely wood, bamboo, rattan and fibers. With a preliminary round of invited works from Taiwan as a foundation, he extends outward to seek out works from other countries with significant differences in aesthetics and technology.
The exhibition presents the rich variety of expressions produced using these four types of familiar natural materials through different handcrafted techniques and with distinctive aesthetics from different cultures. They create a harmonious unity when displayed together.
Wishing to gain firsthand knowledge about the materials, and as a gesture of respect toward the artists and their works, the curatorial team handcrafted four large screen panels made from each of the materials at the venue. These panels were initiated from the connective methods and characteristics specific to each material. Tongue and groove joints for wood; weaving for bamboo; winding for rattan; and slicing, cutting, or folding fibers, represented by paper. Whether rigid, flexible, or soft, the connective construction of the four screen panels find their genesis in the millennia of accumulated human knowledge. As a guide for linear movement within the space, it creates a tranquil effect of light and shadows.
The curator has chosen several of the screens from among hundreds of prototypes created in the production process to construct the entry wall for the exhibition. They intend to welcome visitors with the sincerity of unhurried hands.
