BY TINA TZIALLAS ARCHITECTURE STUDIO | FURNITURE AND FITOUT BY FACTOR DESIGN

With a history of creating beautiful bespoke furniture, many people are familiar with Australia’s Southern Highlands furniture designer/maker Ian Factor’s work as one-off, signature pieces that are set to become centrepiece’s of any setting. But, demand has dictated a broadening in reach of Ian’s design and development to encompass projects with the diversity of complete commercial spaces to beautiful bespoke domestic kitchens.

ARCHITECTURAL BRIEF & RESPONSE
The architectural brief for this project centred around converting an existing machinery shed into a state of the art, functional work space. The client’s interest in contemporary design influenced the architectural response to the project.

Tina of tina tziallas | architecture studio set about creating something completely out of the box. The old shed became unrecognisable, with a re-dressed facade of black glass. Roller doors past their prime were replaced with high-performance tilt doors.

The outcome is astounding. An contemporary workspace with an indoor, outdoor connection. The sky and vegetation is directly reflected in the building. Inside a modern, serene workplace that can be enclosed and insular or opened to natural elements.

The architectural response allowed for a minimal and restrained interior which acted as a perfect canvas for Ian Factor’s beautiful fitout. Working closely with Ian meant that the interior envelope and furniture fitout did not compete, but that the building gave Ian’s pieces the space they needed to take centre stage. The end result is a functional, beautiful and dynamic contemporary work space that has exceeded the client’s expectations and maximised the architectural possibilities of re-using an existing rural out-building.

Ian of Factor Design responded with a contemporary, unique, inspirational, personal and functional solution. This unique black glass cube, home to high-end software development company, Inteweave with Factor’s furniture was transformed from open plan space into a creative office environment.

Factor set to work developing the pieces for this project through the customisation of his existing products. iankea room dividers were used as storage / space dividers, breaking up the work-space from
break-out areas. Work desks were customised to fit the space from certified timbers with their stainless steel supports created by metal artist Ben Blakeborough. Other storage pieces created by Factor to compliment the iankea room dividers were Two draw file units, open shelving in the utility area and enclosed storage units in the kitchen.
